Adoption 302
1 hour TN General CLE
Stepparent, Relative, Adult, Independent Adoption: Plus, interstate adoption, and post adoption contact
Stepparent and relative adoptions are abundant and rewarding work for attorneys, and when the necessary parties all agree, they are relatively easy too. The shortcuts and ticklish spots in client counseling are covered.
But the bulk of the class covers independent (aka private) adoption, an emotionally intense and ethically fraught practice. All the parties are vulnerable and anxious; the facts are complex and shifting. Add that sometimes the other professionals are charlatans, or maybe just sleazy. The stakes are high. The tasks and hours are irregular. This is not a practice for beginners or the faint of heart. Dawn speaks frankly about the realities and perils, so you can offer sound advice and direction that your clients seek. ICPC (Interstate Compact on Placement of Children) and post adoption contact agreements are both common in independent adoption, so both topics are covered here, also.
Very Basic Adoption Practice is a different Good Law seminar that also covers relative (and agency) adoption, but at a slower pace, with less assumed knowledge, and without coverage of independent adoption. That is the appropriate course for true beginners. True beginners should not undertake independent adoption.
